Download YouTube videos in 4K

Pick the resolution you want, from 144p up to 4K (2160p) when the video offers it, and save it as MP4, MKV or MOV. The extension shows every quality YouTube provides for that video, with its size, before you download.

Choosing 4K, step by step

  1. Open the video and click the download button on the player.
  2. On the Video tab, choose a file type first: MKV for 1440p and 4K, MP4 for up to 1080p at 60 frames per second, MOV if you edit on a Mac.
  3. Click the quality you want, for example 2160p. The row shows the codec and the estimated size.
  4. Watch the speed and percentage on the row. You can stop it with one click and start another download at the same time.

Why a 4K download is large

A 2160p video can be over a gigabyte for a few minutes of footage. The menu shows the estimated size next to each quality so you can decide before you start. Lower qualities such as 1080p or 720p are listed too.

Not every video has 4K

The extension lists the qualities YouTube actually provides for that video. If the uploader never published a 4K version, the list starts lower. Older videos and many live recordings top out at 1080p or less.

Fast and light

Downloads are fetched in several parts at once and saved straight to disk. Nothing is uploaded, converted or processed on a server, and no account is needed. Titles, channel, date and cover image are written into the file.

Questions

Which format should I use for 4K?

MKV. In this extension MKV covers 1440p and 4K, while MP4 goes up to 1080p at 60 fps. See MP4 vs MKV vs MOV.

Will 4K play on my TV or phone?

Most modern players, including VLC, handle MKV files. Some TVs and phones are stricter about the codec or container. If a file will not play, try another player first.

Is there a speed or size limit?

No limit from the extension. Speed depends on your connection and on YouTube.

Can I download only the sound from a 4K video?
