Can’t add the extension from a store, or your browser has no store? Download the file here and install it yourself. It is the same extension, just not delivered through a store.
Check the file (SHA-256)6f38fde92a058535a9695be8d09f39619415200b9e670571f8f0ed00761b90ff
Load the zip in about:debugging (steps below). Firefox keeps manually loaded add-ons only until you restart it, unless you use Developer Edition, Nightly or ESR.
Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi
Unzip the file. Double-click it on macOS, or right-click and choose Extract All on Windows. Put the folder somewhere permanent: the browser keeps reading the extension from it, so don’t delete it.
Open the extensions page. Browsers don’t let a web page open it, so copy the address and paste it into the address bar:
Turn on Developer mode (the switch at the top right).
Click Load unpacked and choose the unzipped folder, the one that contains manifest.json.
Pin it (puzzle-piece button, then the pin) and reload your YouTube tab with F5. Done.
Chromium browsers may show a notice about extensions in developer mode when they start. It is normal for manually installed extensions and safe to dismiss.
Firefox
Try it for this session (works in every Firefox, no unzipping):
Open this address:
Click Load Temporary Add-on… and choose the downloaded zip file.
Reload your YouTube tab. The add-on stays until you restart Firefox; load it again then.
Keep it permanently: normal Firefox only keeps add-ons that Mozilla has signed, so add it from Mozilla Add-ons once it is listed there. In Firefox Developer Edition, Nightly or ESR you can instead open about:config, set xpinstall.signatures.required to false, then open about:addons, click the gear and choose Install Add-on From File….
Other browsers and phones
Safari: not supported at the moment.
Chrome on Android and iPhone: browsers on phones usually can’t install extensions. Firefox for Android can: add it from Mozilla Add-ons.
Is the file genuine?
Download it only from this page. Every file has a SHA-256 fingerprint (open Check the file under the download button); the file you got must produce the same one:
macOS and Linux:shasum -a 256 youtube-turbo-downloader-*.zip
Windows:certutil -hashfile youtube-turbo-downloader-<version>-chrome.zip SHA256 (use the file name you downloaded)
Updates
A manually installed extension doesn’t update itself. When there is a new version (see the changelog), come back here, remove the old one in the extensions page and install the new file the same way.
Use it under the laws of your country. See the legal disclaimer.
